Using PageRank To Your Advantage

As we have pointed out before on this blog, PageRank is a tool used by Google to determine which sites to show to their search engine users. Sites that appear to be most popular, most relevant, and most useful are placed at the top of their results. Those that do not meet these qualities, or are new, are placed at the bottom or out of the results altogether. Obviously, it would behoove a new website or blog owner to ensure his or her PageRank is as high as possible.

Before we go into how to actually raise PageRank, let’s first discuss just why this particular tool is useful. As described above, a higher PageRank means that more people searching for your topic will see your site. Simple logic indicates that this will result in higher traffic. And of course higher traffic usually means that your ads and other money-making mechanisms will be more successful.

But this isn’t the only benefit that a high PageRank has. Sites that have high PageRanks are very appealing to new site owners and blog creators who are looking for text links. The best way to build up traffic and PageRank, after all, is to be linked to by a site with a high ranking itself. Thus having a PageRank of 7 or so means that you can sell text links for high amounts of cash and generate income that way.

No matter how you look at it, a high PageRank is almost necessary for a site to make money. It opens up multiple possibilities in ways to generate cash and allows you to spend more time focusing on your content instead of getting links.

Impact of Text Links

When it comes to using text links, many people are confused and have a bad impression as to what the effects of their purchases or rentals are going to have. There are people out there who believe that they can build any site, get a lot of text links and have a good amount of traffic coming in automatically. While it may seem redundant to say this over and over again, this just simply is not true. There is no proven formula to getting big amounts of visitors per month.

One of the worst things to do is to think that you have to put in little effort into your site if you have the right text links. This may work in the short run, but in most cases it will result in burned-out sites in the longterm. Most people do not want to visit blogs and sites without substance and they will not return to your site if you are lucky enough to get them in. You need to have good content and a good solid site that can draw in people on its own. You need to have a site that can generate repeat visitors.

You spend the hundreds, or thousands, of dollars on text linking for a reason. You want to bring in people who otherwise would not have discovered your site for a long time, if at all, and keep them coming so you can generate ad revenue off of them. If you misuse text links by leading people into a worthless site, however, you won’t make any return, at least not a sizable one, on your investment.

It may sound like this point is getting hammered in, but it is an important one. Before you even consider setting up text links and paying money to get people into the site, make sure you have a quality product and a good site to visit. Work hard on all aspects of building a site, not just text linking.

Saving Money On Text Links

Money is an important part of life. Even those who claim that cash is not more important than other factors know that without money life is hard to live. Money allows us to buy new houses, new cars, and so on. And because of that, it becomes all the more important to save up money and to have as much as possible whenever it is needed. For that reason, paying a big amount for text links is never a good idea. Text links can, in the long run, help the smart financial web owner make money, They can drive in more traffic and bring in more AdSense, and so on, revenue.

But that doesn’t mean you should spend the house on getting text links. If you have read other posts on this blog, you know my opinion on text links. You should have as much as possible as cheaply as possible. But just how do you do that?

But why should it matter how much you pay? What is the difference between 50 dollars and 60 dollars if you get the right amount of traffic? The truth is that you never have any guarantee of traffic from a text link, which makes paying more for any a bad move.

It is never a bad idea to squabble with a big site owner. Ask to pay less or negotiate a monthly plan that allows you to cancel in the case that traffic does not increase. In fact, monthly plans encourage the site owner to help bring more traffic to your site. If they know they will lose income by not placing your link well, they will help you out much more than they would otherwise.

Either way, by using text links smarter, you will save money. Don’t be a sucker, use your text link purchases smartly.

Increasing Your PageRank

The number one reason, as we have discussed before, for buying and trading text links is to raise your PageRank value. PageRank works as an “election” of sites. The ones with the most “votes” get the highest search priority when Google shows results to web browsers. But just how do you raise PageRank outside of text links? After all, text links aren’t the only way to get a higher PageRank, though they are the easiest.

For starters, PageRank is a value that is calculated every couple of months. This means that for the first few months of your site’s existence, expect the PageRank to be zero and nothing else. That doesn’t mean you have a bad site and have to make wholescale changes. It just means that you have to be patient and wait out the beginning period.

PageRank determines how useful a site is to someone looking for a certain keyword. If you have a site about poker, the search engine will be looking for how many times you actually mention poker-related words. This makes it critical for new sites to “optimize” their sites by using keywords a good amount of time. This means that even if it may sound weird to overuse the word poker, it will result in higher search results if you do it.

Now, there are plenty of sites online that will tell you what percentage of your post has a certain keyword. In fact here is one right here. Just use this site and make sure you keep the percentage of the keyword to 3-4% and you’ll be fine. Your PageRank should eventually rise and once you have a loyal traffic coming in, you can stop writing keywords in at a high rate.

Basics to Determining Selling Prices

In the past few days, we have discussed the basics to how much to pay for text links. While this blog has not, and in all likelihood will not, provided exact numbers to pay for text links, guidelines and procedures were provided to determine such information on your own. When it comes time to sell links, however, you should have a very different mindset than you had before. You should not look to ask for the same as everyone else, you should look to maximize your revenue and to meet your priorities first.

Sites that generate high traffic are naturally going to make more money through ad revenue. That is obvious. What may not be as obvious, however, is that owning such a site can generate extra income through text linking. Most sites can support ten-twenty text links with no problem. Check some major blog’s blogrolls (right-hand column) and you will notice linking to many different blogs.

Before you begin to place advertisements for link space on forums, make sure you know what you want. Do you want a good website that does not mislead visitors into going to sites geared towards making money, not giving knowledge? Chances are that anyone who pays for links will not have a terrific site. Remember your site carries a part of the reputation of any sites you link to. If you don’t want to risk losing traffic, don’t accept bad links cheaply, if at all.

The other thing you have to decide is how much to charge and how long a payment will last for. Many people who sell links do so on a monthly basis. They allow site owners to place links for say $5, a rough estimate, a month and to cancel this service after any payment. If you have an in-demand site, this is a great option. There are site owners who are willing to pay more for good links. If you choose to allow site owners to have links for a year, or forever, make sure that the price reflects that.

Take time to determine how much you will charge and to look at the links you accept. You are lucky if you have a site that will make money through text links, don’t throw away your advantage by misusing it.

Getting Free Links Part Two - Directories

As we explored in the first part of this feature, getting free links is an integral part of doing online business. Links are, after all, used like votes by search engines like Google. The more backlinks you get from highly ranked Google pages, the better for you.

In the first part of this feature on how to get free links, we discussed using forum signatures as a way to get your site link out there. It is possible, using this method, to have your link on the internet a couple thousand times in no time. And while most of these links will be coming from one or two forums, it is still nice to have them out there for publicity and PageRank means.

In this second part, we’ll look at using online directories. Online directories are like the Yellow Pages for the internet. They consist of many different categories and sections and allow users to place pertinent links within their system. Many of these directories are free and allow users to submit new sites at any time. These directories can be found through simple searches on Google.

Now you may be wondering what the use of a free link from a directory is. The link is sure to be contained deep within the site, after all, and it is unlikely that it will carry much weight, if any, with Google’s rankings. The truth is that no links are bad links. Even if Google never hears about your directory usage, there is a chance that someone interested in your site will one day use the directory to visit your blog or site. And it’s free, so why not use it?

I’m not saying to go crazy and submit everywhere, though you can if you want to. But putting your site into the more well-known and used directories on the internet is just smart business. After all, you have nothing to lose by doing so.

Getting Free Links Part One - Forums

When buying text links it is always best to get the best possible sites with the highest PageRanks. It is only natural, of course, that a consumer should want to get the most bang for his or her buck. When looking to get text links, in general, however, one should not be as cautious with which free links he or she takes. The truth is that there are many online devices to help a person get more links to their website or blog without paying a dime. While these techniques are far to intricate to discuss in one post, we will go over a simple one for now.

Forums, or message boards, are a meeting place for people to discuss various topics online. They allow people who share common interests or hobbies to have a common sharing ground without, for the most part, intrusion from outsiders. Many message boards are ranked highly on Google and other search engines because of their popularity. RealGM’s forum, as an example, is a high search result for those looking for sports-related forums and discussion.

Of course, you probably already know what a message board is. So why is it important to someone looking for text links? The simple answer is that you get to use your signature. A signature is a device that enables forum members to advertise knowledge or links to other posters. That means that with each post you make on a forum, your signature will also be added on.

Now imagine what would happen if you became a member of a popular forum that held a high rank on Google. You could post thousands of times and each time your signature, with your homepage link, would add another inbound link to your total.

Now imagine what would happen if you did this on several forums. Over the course of a few months. These links may not count for as much as others because they all come from one site, but Google surely will recognize the high amount of links. And remember, your signature will also be seen by thousands of other forum members who may be interested in your site.

We will explore other methods for getting free links later. For now, start using forums and increase your link total.

Cost of Buying a Text Link

In the early posts of this blog, we have explored the basics on where and how to buy text links and from whom one should get links from in the first place. One aspect of the transaction we have not covered, however, is how much one should pay for text links. Essentially, after all, it really does come down to how much something costs in a decision-making process. This is true for every purchasing choice made by a person on a budget.

You may find the perfect partner to deal with. He or she may have a blog or site that has a high page rank, reliable traffic, a similar topic, and a good linking spot on their home page. But what happens if this person demands an unreasonable amount? What is, for that matter, an unreasonable amount to pay?

The truth is that there is no easy answer to that question. Definitions of how much a site or blog’s link value is at varies from person to person. The easiest, and most reliable, way to tell if you are getting a fair deal is to look at other offers and get an idea for the market value of similarly positioned blogs or sites. This forum, that has been linked to before, has many, many link sales offers. Calculate what the average asking price for a PR4 or a PR5 blog is and don’t pay any more than that amount for your PR4 or PR5 link. If you get an offer to buy for less than market value, great!

Remember that no text link guarantees high traffic. You may think a particular site or blog is worth twice the market value, but is it going to bring you more visitors than two different text links would? And how many text links can you afford if you waste extra money on one link? Make sure you don’t hurt your overall plan by overspending on a single link. Get an idea of the market value and stick to it. It’ll pay off in the long run.

Remembering To Return Favors

Now this might seem like a little premature, seeing as how the beginnings of this blog have dealt with starting up sites and blogs, but after some time, if you are lucky enough to have a successful site or blog, you may find yourself bombarded with link trade and purchase requests. If and when this happens, take a moment to do two things; 1) congratulate yourself on building a terrific site or blog that others acknowledge and 2) remember to return the favors you got.

Everyone who tries hard enough will run into a couple nice people. Web owners who remember what it was like to start up a new site and drive in traffic. Helpful experts who willingly link to your unproven blog or site for free, in an effort to help. Keep those people in mind when you decide whether or not to help out a newcomer down the line.

It’s easy to approach the situation as a businessperson who only cares about the bottom-line. After all, text linking space is, believe it or not, limited and those lucky enough to have willing buyers would be financially foolish to turn them away. But it is never a bad thing to make the internet a better place. If you get a request from a site or blog with original and interesting content that you yourself enjoy, why not link to them?

After all, the essential reasoning for linking, before SEO made everyone crazy to “improve” their sites, was to show other people what interests you on the web.

I’m not saying you should give free text links away to everyone who asks. There are people who, everyday, make sites and blogs with no good content for the sole purpose of making money as quickly as possible. Those site owners should have to pay for bogging down search engines. But don’t dismiss every e-mail or message that comes your way. Remember the favors you got when you first started out and try to return them.

Managing Text Linking Time

The popular business saying these days seems to be, “time is money.” To a certain extent, that phrase is true. For businessmen who work all day, time spent doing something useless certainly can cost them money. For high school teenagers who spend their free time watching sports and playing video games, not that there is anything wrong with that, free time is not worth money.

New web owners who spend a lot of their free time trying to promote and increase traffic for their site will quickly find that their time will become valuable. It may seem easy to start a new site. But between designing the layout, writing the content, ensuring there are no coding problems, submitting the site to search engines, buying/trading text links, placing ads, and so on, one will find that time runs out very quickly. Thus it becomes all the more important to do tasks smarter.

For instance, when first starting out a website or blog, one should try to only get the text links that have the most worth added onto their site. Having a functional, interesting site is much more important in the beginning than having one-and-done visitors see the site. Try to find big websites, with high PageRanks, to link to you before e-mailing and messaging every person you can. Try to find sites that have established high traffic numbers and those that display their links well before asking those with smaller numbers and worse policies.

Eventually, of course, you will want to get as many text links as possible. But in the beginning, its always smart to try to create a quality product people will want to visit over and over again. What use is traffic that never returns because of an initial bad first impression? Buy and trade text links the smart way in the beginning and you’ll do just fine.
