Getting Free Links Part Two - Directories

As we explored in the first part of this feature, getting free links is an integral part of doing online business. Links are, after all, used like votes by search engines like Google. The more backlinks you get from highly ranked Google pages, the better for you.

In the first part of this feature on how to get free links, we discussed using forum signatures as a way to get your site link out there. It is possible, using this method, to have your link on the internet a couple thousand times in no time. And while most of these links will be coming from one or two forums, it is still nice to have them out there for publicity and PageRank means.

In this second part, we’ll look at using online directories. Online directories are like the Yellow Pages for the internet. They consist of many different categories and sections and allow users to place pertinent links within their system. Many of these directories are free and allow users to submit new sites at any time. These directories can be found through simple searches on Google.

Now you may be wondering what the use of a free link from a directory is. The link is sure to be contained deep within the site, after all, and it is unlikely that it will carry much weight, if any, with Google’s rankings. The truth is that no links are bad links. Even if Google never hears about your directory usage, there is a chance that someone interested in your site will one day use the directory to visit your blog or site. And it’s free, so why not use it?

I’m not saying to go crazy and submit everywhere, though you can if you want to. But putting your site into the more well-known and used directories on the internet is just smart business. After all, you have nothing to lose by doing so.
